Trade and investment

The Welsh Government is committed to making Wales the best possible environment for Life Sciences innovation and business growth. Significant support is available in key areas like medical devices, in-vitro diagnostics, wound healing, e-health, neuroscience, regenerative medicine and pharmaceutical services. Combined with the £100 million Life Sciences Investment Fund, the largest dedicated investment fund for any sector in Wales, the launch in July 2014 of the Life Sciences Hub in the heart of Cardiff Bay has placed Wales on the world stage for Life Sciences innovation and development.

The Life Sciences Hub is the nerve centre of a vibrant and prosperous Wales Life Sciences ecosystem and brings together academic, business, clinical, professional services and funding organisations to provide a commercially-driven melting pot of talent. This support spans academic and clinical settings too - NHS Wales has extensively digitised patient records, accelerated permissions for clinical trials, and over £40 million invested in research annually; top quality academic research is supported by £50 million through the Science for Wales policy. As a location Wales provides a dynamic, innovative culture for pursuing discoveries and new product developments along with a strong cluster of clinical trial facilities, accessible via a single portal, able to undertake product testing.

Recent infrastructure developments have seen the opening of the Welsh Wound Innovation Centre and the current development of a state-of-the-art Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products manufacturing facility. The opening of GE Healthcare’s first UK Innovation Village is another great example of open innovation and partnership between the public and private sectors to boost Life Sciences in Wales.
