Lithotripsy

Lithotripsy (extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, ESWL) woman drinking glass of water Lithotripsy is the breaking down of kidney stones by pressure waves. These pressure waves are focused onto the kidney stone with the use of ultrasound and X-ray. The waves travel through the body tissues without damaging them and reduce the kidney stone to a fine gravel which is passed naturally in urine over a period of time, usually with no pain. Treatment Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) is normally delivered by up to three sessions, each lasting approximately 45 minutes, the treatment is relatively painless. Once the treatment begins we will ask for your feedback to ensure that the shockwaves are reaching the affected area, once this has been established you must lie very still to ensure the treatment is as effective as possible. In the days after treatment there may be some redness to the site or bruising, this is perfectly normal however if you have any concerns contact your practitioner or GP. You may experience some discomfort during treatment, similar to an elastic band being flicked against the skin but pain relief will be available in consultation with the nursing staff and your consultant.
